Making Healthy Choices for Fare at the Fair

BLOOMSBURG, COLUMBIA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — When you think of the Bloomsburg Fair, the first thing that probably comes to mind is food. But, is there a way to satisfy your fair food appetite without going calorie and carb crazy? The Bloomsburg Fair sure has its share of deliciously fattening foods. We checked to see how some fair-goers satisfy their appetites and how their choices may impact their health.
If you can fry it and eat it, you can probably find it at the Bloomsburg Fair. Dalon Ward of Lock Haven said, “I like the deep fried mozzarella balls.” Jen Geary of Mount Carmel added, “The fried veggies are my favorite. So, that’s what we come for.” If you’re not mindful of what you eat, you just might break the calorie bank. “It can, you know, blow somebody’s diet out of the water,” said Geisinger Clinical Dietitian Amy Cartwright.
When it comes to deep fried food, calories and saturated fat combine for a dietary culprit. Some fair-goers who can’t resist deep fried food have a strategy. “We try and share between the family so you don’t eat as much,” said Ms. Geary. That’s a good idea according to Ms. Cartwright. “You’re splitting the calories and it may leave room for something else that, you know, you want to enjoy as well.”
If you’re looking to get your fill and eat healthy, Ms. Cartwright says look for sensible options. “There’s chicken kabobs. There’s roasted chicken. I know I’ve seen some stands that have roasted chicken. And there’s soups, different types of soups, chili.”
Many fair-goers look to top off their meal by satisfying their sweet tooth including George Neubert of Bloomsburg who said, “I went out and ran tonight before I came here just so I could eat another apple dumpling.”
Ms. Cartwright says consider a more nutritious alternative like a chocolate covered banana or smoothie. “Those types of things would be a good option. If you’re looking for something sweet but not with all the extra fat and calories.”
One other tip to consider before filling up at the Bloomsburg Fair, make sure you eat a little something before you get there. Ms. Cartwright explained why that’s a good idea saying “so not going to the fair extremely hungry because that’s going to drive the portions you eat and sometimes the food that you choose.”
Ms. Cartwright said it’s important to plan ahead so that you don’t take in a few days worth of calories and fat in a single fair visit. Also remember to stay hydrated at the fair but be careful not to drink your calories or carbs in sugary beverages. Opt for water or unsweetened ice tea to keep you hydrated and full and help keep you from overindulging.
