LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Tragedy in what’s considered a peaceful neighborhood. Investigators say a shooting Saturday afternoon involving two juveniles leaves one of them dead.
After spending hours at the scene in Exeter, state police informed Eyewitness News that a girl has died and that the suspect is also a juvenile.
“It has shaken me to the core,” neighbor Georgia Young said.
Young was stunned to see caution tape and police cars everywhere on the 100 block of Aster Court. Local and state police were called to Wildflower Village around 3 p.m.
Troopers later revealed a girl was killed and the person who pulled the trigger was another juvenile. Kaitlyn Szoradi moved to the neighborhood of townhouses about a month ago.
“That’s scary that there’s even a chance that they could get their hands on a gun,” Szoradi said.
The victim was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. State police are classifying it as a criminal investigation because it involves a shooting, but didn’t indicate if it’s considered intentional or accidental.
Young has lived here for more than a decade. She says the residents who lived where the shooting happened had only lived there a few months. Young and many others are still trying to process what happened in their tight-knit community.
“I can’t believe something like that has happened in our neighborhood. I really can’t,” Young said.
This is an ongoing investigation that Pennsylvania State Police and the Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office are working on together.
State police haven’t released any names or indicate if the suspect is a boy or a girl. An autopsy on the victim is scheduled for Sunday in Luzerne County.
