WAVERLY, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE 28/WYOU 22 EYEWITNESS NEWS) — A traffic stop turns into a crash and a stand-off with police. Now, one person is in custody.

A stretch of North Abington Road was blocked off as Dalton Police negotiated with the driver who was armed with a knife. Dalton Police say earlier Wednesday evening, an officer pulled over a vehicle at East Main Street and Lily Lake Road in Waverly.

According to police, the driver had multiple warrants. Police say during the traffic stop the driver tried to run over the officer and a chase ensued.

The driver flipped his vehicle at Craig road and North Abington Road. The driver was armed with a knife and refused to get out of the car.

Police say after three hours of negotiations, officers were able to disarm the driver who was then transported to the hospital. Police have yet to release the driver’s name. They say charges are pending.
