HANOVER TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man is in police custody after a tense stand off with police ended early Wednesday morning.

According to police, the standoff began around 8PM on Tuesday night when police received reports of a man, later identified as Edward Wiatrowski, threatening to harm himself and others at a home on Main Road in Hanover Township.

When police arrived on scene they observed Waitrowski with two handguns inside the residence.

Waitrowski refused to cooperate with police and threatened to shoot police if they came close to the residence.

With the help of the Pennsylvania State Police Special Emergency Response Team, Waitrowski surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody around 12:30 AM.

Police recovered two handguns and a rifle from the residence that Waitrowski was inside.

Bail was denied for Waitrowski on the grounds that he poses a risk to himself and others.

He is currently in custody at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital undergoing a inpatient crisis evaluation.
