Name of kayaker missing for three days released by coroner

MONTOUR TOWNSHIP, COLUMBIA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) UPDATE: The Columbia County Coroner has released the name of the Mount Carmel man who died last week while kayaking.

According to the coroner, Vahan Hakobyan, 27, of Mount Carmel, died after an accidental drowning.

The body of a missing kayaker was recovered along the Susquehanna River Friday morning.

The 27-year-old man from Mount Caramel was last seen paddling on the river on Wednesday.

Police say they searched the area where his body surfaced early Friday morning. They believe he was caught under a rock ledge in the the middle of the river. Police say the man was not wearing a life jacket at the time.

“For days first responders, volunteers have been out there from all over the state they’ve been coming. I can’t even express the gratitude i have for the amount of volunteers i’ve had and the amount of work they’ve put into this,” said Chief Terry Eckart of the Montour Township Police Department.

The victim’s name will be released after relatives have been notified.
