COOLBAUGH TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Charges have been filed in a hit and run crash in Monroe County.
51-year-old Andrea Mazzella is charged with aggravated assault on law enforcement. Monday night, he remains in the hospital. Police are investigating what led to the crash and why the man was naked inside his car.
Within mile marker four on Interstate 380 North, state police say 51-year-old Andrea Mazzella of Jim Thorpe crashed into a stretch of guide-rail.
“While the person who called 911 was on the phone with 911, the operator of the crash struck a guide-rail, fled the scene. So now the trooper was responding to a hit and run crash,” Trooper Anthony Petroski said.
Petroski says state police were able to locate Mazzella and pulled him over. They say Mazzella did not exit the vehicle upon request but then suddenly opened the door and took off on foot.
“At that time the trooper attempted to gain him into custody and a physical altercation ensued. The trooper received minor injuries. The operator was taken into custody,” Petroski said.
Mazzella was flown to Geisinger CMC in Scranton for a head injury he sustained from the crash. He is charged with one felony, three misdemeanors, and one summary offense.
“Mazzella is being charged with aggravated assault on law enforcement, simple assault on harassment amongst vehicle code violations,” Petroski said.
Mazzella remains in serious condition at the hospital. Now, there are two investigations happening. You have one with the aggravated assault on law enforcement and second, the crash.
It’s considered a hit and run because the guide-rail is owned by PennDOT.
