MIDDLE SMITHFIELD TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — State police were on the scene of an incident in Monroe County where they say multiple troopers shot and killed a man Thursday.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, around 9:59 a.m. troopers were called for a welfare check on an individual in the 6200 block of Deer Drive North in Middle Smithfield Township.

Troopers said they made many attempts to make contact with the 36-year-old man but he refused to open the door.

As stated in the release, the man then unexpectedly ran out of the residence through the back door, carrying a rifle, troopers then fired their weapons, hitting him.

Troopers said they gave medical aid until EMS arrived, the man was pronounced dead on the scene.

PSP says the troopers who fired their weapons will be placed on administrative duty as per Pennsylvania State Police department regulations.

The Monroe County District Attorney’s Office and the Troop N Major Case Team are conducting a joint investigation.
