Crowd favorite Craig Sager will not be in attendance to cover the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio this August.

In 2014, Sager was diagnosed with leukemia and according to the Houston Chronicle, he had hoped to delay his upcoming procedure until after the Olympics. However, he said doctors have recommended beginning treatment now, as his body is not getting stronger.

Sager would have joined Marv Albert and Doug Collins to cover the basketball portion of the Rio Games.

The statement from NBC on Sager’s absence can be read below:

“Craig Sager has returned to MD Anderson to continue his fight against leukemia. He is preparing for a third bone marrow transplant which will prevent him from covering the Olympics in Rio. We wish him the best in his continued recovery.”

Sager is hoping to be back on the sidelines for the NBA’s opening night.
