Zika Prevention and Awareness Campaign

(WBRE/WYOU) – The threat of the Zika virus is growing, especially as peak mosquito season is upon us, so the Pennsylvania Department of Health is launching a new Zika virus prevention and awareness campaign.

Though no one has contracted the virus here yet, the Pennsylvania Department of Health is taking no chances.  Wednesday they launched a new Zika virus prevention and awareness campaign, which includes hanging posters with Zika virus prevention tips all airports that have international destinations, including the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Airport.

Recommendations are also out for people taking a “stay-cation as well. Here are tips to prevent mosquito bites:
– use bug spray with Deet.
– wear clothing that covers your body.
– stay in screened-in rooms or under a mosquito net.
– and  stay indoors when mosquitoes are most active.

Other mosquito repelling advice from the Department is for around the home:
-use window and door screens.
-empty and scrub items that hold water
-use flying insect spray where mosquitos rest — like under patio furniture or under the carport or garage.
– clean roof gutters
-if you have a septic tank, repair cracks or gaps.
-and cover open vents or pipes with wire mesh.
