Woman killed in early morning nursing home fire in Monroe County


EAST STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – Update: The coroner has identified the victim of the fire as. 63 year old Debra Gryczko.  She was a resident at Shirley Futch Plaza in East Stroudaburg.  

The Monroe County Coroner has confirmed the death of an elderly woman in a nursing fire in East Stroudsburg Thursday morning.

Firefighters were called to the Shirley Futch Plaza subsidized senior living facility about nine o’clock Thursday morning to combat a fire on the first floor.

two maintenance men initially knocked down the fire and entered using a fire extinguisher.

The coroner says the woman’s body was found after the fire was put out in a bedroom.

About 200 people live in the facility according to the local fire chief, all were safely moved to the lobby.

At this point, no identification of the victim has been released, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
