DICKSON CITY, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – A woman is facing multiple charges after police say she stole an ambulance and led them on a chase through part of Lackawanna County.

Police tell Eyewitness News that Stephanie Schwambach, 44, of Shillington stole the Pennsylvania ambulance from Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton around 11:00p.m. on Thursday. Olyphant Police say that Schwambach doused herself with diesel fuel and crashed a U-Haul truck near Geisinger CMC’s helipad at Nay Aug before stealing the ambulance from the Emergency Department’s Ambulance Bay.

Olyphant Police say they tried to stop the woman on Lackawanna Avenue, but she got away after hitting two vehicles.

“Four cop SUV’s had rolled by me with their lights on going up the hill. It was crazy and that was before I knew anything about the ambulance and I came down to work and they were all saying they just saw it,” Jeremy Whalen told Eyewitness News.

Police say Schwambach led them on a chase to Dickson City, where she ended up crashing. They tell us she drove right off a man’s driveway into a patch of trees at the intersection of Amherst and Templeton Drives.

Schwambach was taken to GCMC for evaluation and she was arraigned by a judge inside the hospital. Schwambach is facing several charges, including Fleeing and Eluding, Aggravated Assault, Reckless Endangering another person, Receiving Stolen Property, and other serious traffic violations. Her bail has been set at $25,000.

Schwambach is expected to face even more charges in the future. It will be up to Scranton Police to charge her for the actual theft of the ambulance.
