WILLIAMSPORT, LYCOMING COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) The Williamsport City Council is lashing out at embattled Mayor Gabriel Campana – saying he illegally signed a contract with a New York-based company which could have cost local businesses as much as 100-thousand dollars.
The council says in march it began getting complaints from local businesses that “Community Showcase Banners” – was aggressively selling banners – claiming it was part of a city-backed program endorsed by the mayor.
One hundred twenty-one of the banners were purchased by local businesses.
Late today, the council said the city never endorsed the program – and says the mayor illegally signed a contract with the company.
The council is warning businesses they may be “…Out the costs of their outlays due to the mayor’s illegal and unauthorized actions.”
It said businesses may end up suing the mayor – or the company – or both – but the city would fight any legal action because it never had a valid contract.
