Wilkes-Barre Modifies Fire Watch Program

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) - The City of Wilkes-Barre is modifying its Fire Watch Program to its previous form.

In a statement released by the city on Saturday, they state the original Fire Watch Patrol will be resumed.  City leaders say there was always a Fire Watch Patrol Policy.  But in August that policy was revised, causing a strong outcry from the Firefighters Union.  Now, the city’s Mayor says the original policy will be re-implemented moving forward.

"Our intention is to continue to monitor the Community Fire Watch program and make adjustments, if appropriate, consistent with the operational needs of the department and in an effort to provide for the safety of the public" the statement said.

Wilkes-Barre Firefighters are still in contract negotiations with the city.
