TANNERSVILLE, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – Twenty of Monroe County’s top employers came together Wednesday, all with one mission in mind. Their goal is to connect unemployed veterans with potential jobs.
Anthony Grant is an Army veteran. He recently moved to Monroe County, and needs to find a job.
“I saw this so I said, ‘okay let me go and see what it’s about’,” explains Anthony Grant of Effort.
He learned about different opportunities during this Veterans Job Fair at Northampton Community College in Tannersville. The event featured 20 of the top local employers, including the Tobyhanna Army Depot and FedEx.
“Everybody was helpful. You know, they gave me great information and everything,” Grant adds.
Charles Montalbano, a veteran himself, works with Career Link, which organized this event.
“In Monroe County we have 11,000 veterans. And they come to our office either looking for part-time work, full-time work, but they just can’t find jobs,” says Charles Montalbano, Veterans Employment Representative.
According to the most recent statistics we were provided with, nearly 9% of Monroe County veterans were unemployed in 2016, while statewide the veteran unemployment rate was 6.3%.
“There’s just about any kind of job you can think of up here,” Monalbano says.
That includes ‘The Brain Show’.
“The Brain Show is a motivational, educational program that serves well over a half-a-million school children a year nationally,” explains Jeff Olear, CEO, The Brain Show.
CEO Jeff Olear wants to give veterans the opportunity to travel from school to school serving as a game show host.
He says, “that type of person who has been in the thick of it somewhere in the world would come here and say ‘this is the job for me!'”
This is the first year for the Veteran’s Job Fair.
Veterans in need of assistance are encouraged to contact their local state representatives and Career Link.
