Gunfire erupts in a Columbia County neighborhood Monday morning forcing the lockdown of schools and causing fear among those who live and work in the area.
“I asked what was going on, they told me that they had heard there were gunshots. I didn’t know right away what was going on exactly. I heard there was a shooting,” said Michaelene Basin of Berwick.
The bullets began to fly on Pine Street near 11th Street at around 8:30 Monday morning. Michaelene Basin was at a nearby car dealership to have her car serviced when she saw the commotion.
“Sure it was a little nerve racking but I did feel safe inside the building and I figured the men in blue would get the guy and I’m told they have,“ Said Basin.
Bullets shattered the window of this laundromat. Bullets also struck the Pine Street Baptist church. State police forensic experts marked the area where shell casings landed.
Witnesses describe what happened as a “shoot-out” and it’s still unclear how many shots were fired.
“Very crazy, hectic situation, schools were shut down, they’re off lockdown now it was an isolated incident and we do believe we have all the players in custody and everybody is safe, no one’s been injured,“ Said Berwick Mayor Tim Burke
Dominic Valeri shops at the nearby Weis Store just yards away from where the gunshots rang out.
“I hope nobody got hit that was my main concern. Which I heard nobody did get hit by bullets which is good,“ Said Valeri.
Police Chief Ken Strish told the I-Team this was a domestic type incident and that came to a boiling point on Pine Street again charges are expected to be filed shortly.
