University of Scranton responds to sex abuse scandal

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) -- The backlash continues after an explosive grand jury report named more than 300 predator priests in Pennsylvania, detailing more than 1,000 victims.

Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests held events in each of the six Catholic diocese on Monday, including Scranton.

They also invited survivors and their families to a support session at Albright Memorial Library.

Last week Attorney General Josh Shapiro called out former Bishop James Timlin for supporting a priest accused of raping a girl and getting her pregnant.

Timlin's attorney said his client doesn't agree with all of the conclusions but "sadly acknowledges" that the diocese efforts were imperfect.

"Knowing that so many children have been harmed is very sad and tragic," said Tim Lennon with Survivors Network for Those Abused by Priests.  "I know how much harm child sex abuse has on a person.  I'm 71, and I feel that impact every day."

The University of Scranton announced its decision to rescind honorary degrees and rename campus buildings recognizing Timlin, as well as Bishops Jerome D. Hannan and J. Carroll McCormick.

The President of the University of Scranton said the staff of the counseling center and campus ministries are available to help students.
