Truck driver rescued after being trapped for hours

SOUTH ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man was trapped inside the cab of his tractor trailer for hours after a crash Thursday morning in Lackawanna County.

It happened on the southbound off-ramp from Interstate 81 in South Abington Township.

Chief Sean Connolly with Chinchilla Hose Company told Eyewitness News firefighters spent almost six hours trying to pull the driver from this pile of mangled metal.

Once the man was finally free, he was taken by ambulance to Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton.

He suffered serious injuries, especially to his legs.  The chief said a trauma team from the hospital didn’t leave his side.

“He was conscious with us,” said Connolly.  “He was responding to our questions and answers, and we kept him stable.”

Even after the driver was rescued, this clean-up effort was far from over.  Connolly said the truck was hauling cases of beer, and some of the bottles scattered onto the road.

Crews also had to deal with a diesel fuel spill, but that was quickly contained.  Now investigators are piecing together what caused this rollover wreck.
