Lanes reopen after tractor trailer fire shut down part of I-81 north

UPDATE: Both lanes have reopened.

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU-TV) — I-81 northbound is down to one lane from Exit 151 which connects to I-80 to exit 155 in Dorrance due to a tractor trailer fire. PennDOT estimates the roadway will reopen around 4 p.m.

The tractor trailer was hauling glue from Georgia heading for Taylor and caught fire in the northbound lane at Dorrance. The driver noticed smoke just before 2:30 p.m. and pulled over a mile south of the Dorrance exit, at mile marker 154.

Before the driver could disconnect his trailer, the tractor burst into flames and was destroyed before firefighters could arrive and extinguish it. The driver wasn’t hurt and the load of glue, stored in large tanks in the trailer, was saved.

There was no spill but traffic had to be stopped so firetrucks could get to the burning truck by driving south in the northbound lanes.

Both lanes reopened at approximately 3:30 p.m. For the most recent road information, visit 511PA.
