SOUTH CANAAN TOWNSHIP, WAYNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It’s always good to remember your daily dose of iron, or in this case, irons. Eyewitness News Reporter Anja Whitehead tees off in Wayne County for Worldwide Women’s Golf Day.
“That’s why I retired, so I could spend more time golfing,” Lilian Rollison said.
The woman here at Red Maples Golf Couse in South Canaan Township can’t seem to stay away from the green. Most have been coming here for years and love the fun and friendly atmosphere.
“You get to enjoy the golf course, but really you get to enjoy the happiness that you feel when you’re out,” Diane Pozza, Part-Owner of Red Maples Golf Couse said.
Today on the course they are celebrating World Woman’s Golf Day. There are nearly 1,000 courses around the world participating, but Red Maples is one of the few courses in our area that is involved.
“It’s really historic when you think of it,” Sharon Carroll, a woman golfer at Red Maples Golf Course said. “Here we are, the nearest one is Harrisburg or into Phildalephia, and of course there is Dubai and Scotland.”
They want more women to come out and try the sport, including the younger generation.
“Women’s World Golf Day is really so that women who don’t golf, or want refreshers, can come out and join the camaraderie that we have here at Red Maples,” Lilian Robinson said.
And even if you’re just a beginner, learning is a part of the fun.
“There’s always a challenge against who you might be playing with, but the main challenge is with yourself,” Art Mclain, Golf Instructor at Red Maples Golf Course said. “No matter how good you are, you can get better.”
Women’s Golf Day is celebrated in dozens of countries around the world.
