SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It’s difficult enough for a parent with one child dealing with a devastating illness, but imagine having two children facing such a serious health struggle. That’s the plight of a family in Lackawanna County, and on Saturday, that family received an outpouring of support.

It’s not unusual to see a pretty good crowd on a Saturday at Morgan’z Pub and Eatery, but this one was exceptional and for a very good cause.

“We decided to help out the best way we could,” said Kristen Scott, an employee of Morgan’z Pub and Eatery.

The business hosted a fundraiser for two children who are in the fight of their young lives.

“We just kind of all got together. We reached out to friends. We put it on Facebook and the outcome is overwhelming. I mean the donations and everything has just been amazing,” Scott told Eyewitness News.

Dozens of raffle baskets fill the room. They raffled off a recliner and a kids’ batmobile, the exclamation point on what’s billed as a superhero-themed fundraiser.

“Hi. Nice to meet you. Thank you for coming,” said Liz Kochis.

The thankful woman is Liz Kochis who used to work here. Her three-year-old son, Jaxxon, was diagnosed in the fall of 2021 with leukemia. Her two-year-old son, Abel, received the very same diagnosis this past summer. It’s a lot for a mom to deal with but thanks to this, the load is a little lighter.

“It means so much to me, honestly it means the world you have no idea. Thank you is the least I can say to everybody that came out here to support us,” said Kochis.

Thankful, also, is the aunt of the two young boys who are fighting such a serious illness.

“I wouldn’t wish this on anybody let alone my sister and my nephews and it’s just great to see the community come together,” explained Patrica Bolka, the aunt.

“You know, I love NEPA. I think this is one of the greatest things about this area is when somebody needs help, people really rally together,” Scott added.

Jaxxon and Abel Kochis are due for their next leukemia treatments on Monday.

Meantime, morgan’s pub and eatery will continue accepting donations for the Kochis family, and a family friend has set up a GoFundMe account.
