SUNBURY, NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU-TV) A police department in Northumberland County is in need of some TLC. Eyewitness News Reporter Morgan Parrish explains.
The Sunbury Police Department has been in the same location for the past 20 years. In a building that once housed a bank.
Chief Timothy Miller took over the department last year. He says since then he knew the building needed some sprucing up.
The department’s building committee has been debating whether they should renovate — or just move.
“My belief is this building presents some unique challenges to us as law enforcement officers from doing our job.” Said Chief Miller.
“The holding cells are right in the middle of the station, so if there are people in there it can be a disruption. They can be a nuisance to what the officers are trying to do.” Noted Chris Reis, Sunbury Council member.
Committee members say they’re looking at a half-million to a million dollar project depending on how big they decide to go.
City council says they’re working on grants from the USDA and other local organizations.
They hope to begin renovating or moving by September of this year.
