POCONO TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) Students in Pocono Townsihp took advantage of the nice weather to plant flowers to honor local veterans. Eyewitness News Reporter Charlisa Gordon has our story.
Pocono Mountain East Junior High School student government got down and dirty in an effort to clean up a war memorial.
Dean Nyberg, an 8th grade, Pocono Mt. East JR High told Eyewitness News “It feels really good to help with the memorial, make it really nice for memorial day.”
About a dozen students were on hand to plant red white and blue colored flowers to brighten up the site just in time for Memorial Day.
Samantha Whitley who is in 8th grade noted “We know it’s important to keep this place pretty for them and we know that they can’t always do it for themselves and so it’s important to contribute for those who can’t.”
Mikayla Regan agrees “To me it makes me feel like I’m playing a bigger role in our community.”
This year the township is dedicating the memorial and renaming the park “Veterans Memorial Park” t
Thomas Bowditch, the commander, American Legion Post 903 was very proud of the student’s work and he added, “We all love it,because every year the come down plant new flowers make it look really beautiful for memorial day”.T
The students will be back on the Friday before memorial day to place a wreath at the site to honor the vets
Pocono farm stand and nursery donated all of the flowers for the memorial project.
