Students donate to veterans

WILLIAMSPORT, LYCOMING COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) = These students and their teachers set their eyes on a goal, and they beat that number with the help of their community.

“We hoped to fill three big boxes and we ended up with 15 huge ones,” said Brittany Frey, a teacher with the Commonwealth Charter Academy.

Students and staff with the cyber school filled the boxes with nonperishable items and clothes. They do a community service project every month as part of the school’s “care” initiative. With Memorial Day approaching, the group decided to donate to veterans.

“They risked their lives to keep our country safe,” said Cameron Lewis, a 7th grade student.

“Just in central Pennsylvania, there are 500 veterans in need or homeless. So we thought what better way to help,” said Frey.

The items were donated to the Veterans Multi-Service Center.

“I think one of the greatest lessons we can all learn and really display is kindness and we have so many opportunities here at CCA to do that,” said Frey.

The students also took the time to write “Thank you” cards to the veterans.

A small labor of gratitude for those who gave so much.
