HAZLE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – State police and Hazleton Area School District officials are investigating a case of attempted computer hacking. The I-Team has confirmed that an 18-year-old Male student at the Career Center is the focus of the investigation. District officials say they received a tip that the student was trying to hack into the school district’s computer system. During the probe they say they found web searches on the student’s cell phone that raised concerns. They called in the State Police to investigate. School officials say there is no evidence at this point in time that confidential school district information was compromised. The student was suspended for 10 years and has since been allowed to return to school. Hazleton Area School District Superintendent, Dr. Craig Butler, said “We do not consider him to be a menace to the school environment or a danger in any way”.
