State Trooper Charged With Patronizing Prostitutes in Monroe County

BLAKESLEE, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – Eyewitness News has exclusively learned yet another law enforcement official is charged with crimes against women. This time, it’s a state police trooper in the Poconos.

Investigators say Trooper Benjamin Toth, 32, used fake aliases and online accounts to patronize prostitutes. He is stationed at the PSP Fern Ridge barracks in Blakeslee.

Court documents say the trooper’s wife tipped off police nearly three years ago, providing them with several electronic devices and sexually explicit craigslist postings. Charges are just now being filed because the case was reassigned at one point, and investigators continued collecting evidence up until three months ago.

In 2015, investigators say Toth responded to a suspicious vehicle in Middle Smithfield Township’s ‘Lake of the Pines’ development. He found a 26-year-old woman asleep in the driver’s seat, who passed both field sobriety and medical tests. Toth allegedly asked the woman for her number and, six months later, used a law enforcement database to access her personal information without a valid reason.

Toth also allegedly used a fake Facebook account to message the woman. In the sexually explicit conversation obtained by investigators, Toth offered to send her money for sex.

According to court papers, the trooper used the aliases ‘George’ and ‘Gary’ to solicit women for sex on Facebook and Craigslist.

Investigators say they’ve linked his phone and email to more than 20 inappropriate Craigslist postings.

Eyewitness News visited Toth’s Kunkletown address listed in court papers. His mother answered the door, but declined an interview. She believes Toth is being blackmailed by his wife, adding her son is innocent and plans to fight the charge.

Investigators say they have paperwork showing Toth received therapy for sex addiction in 2016. During treatment, he provided handwritten statements claiming his ‘bottom line behaviors’ were “sex with prostitutes”, “creating secret online profiles/emails”, “sending/receiving explicit photos” and “sex with prostitutes in bedroom or vehicles”.

Toth faces one single misdemeanor charge of Patronizing Prostitutes. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 6th.

The investigation was ultimately handled by the Pennsylvania State Police Internal Affairs Division.
