State reduces speed limits on roadways due to snow

HARRISBURG, DAUPHIN COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – Due to current and predicted weather conditions, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is reducing speed limits on several roadways in the PennDOT District 3 region, which includes Bradford, Columbia, Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder, Sullivan, Tioga and Union counties.

Speed limits have been lowered to 45 miles per hour on the following roads:

  •     Interstate 80, and Interstate 180
  •     Route 11, Route 15, and Route 220

PennDOT has also reduced the speed to 45 mph on the following highways in the Poconos:

  •     Interstate 78 in Berks, Lehigh and Northampton counties;
  •     Interstate 80 in Monroe and Carbon counties;
  •     Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County;
  •     Interstate 176 in Berks County;
  •     Interstate 380 in Monroe County;
  •     US 22 in Lehigh and Northampton counties;
  •     US 209 in Monroe County;
  •     US 222 in Lehigh and Berks counties;
  •     US 422 in Berks County;
  •     PA 33 in Monroe and Northampton counties;
  •     PA 309 in Lehigh County
  • PennDOT is urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel but those who must head out will see speeds reduced to 45 mph on the following highways:

       

  • Interstates 80;
  • Interstate 81;
  • Interstate 84; and
  • Interstate 380.

The PA Turnpike has ALSO temporarily lowered the speed limit on much of its system from the Laurel Highlands through central Pennsylvania. Speeds are now reduced to 45 mph from the Donegal Interchange (exit 91) to the Valley Forge Interchange (exit 326).

PennDOT will continue to treat roadways throughout the storm until precipitation stops and roads are clear.

The department also asks motorists to allow plenty of space when driving near plow trucks. Also, for their own safety and the safety of plow operators, motorists should never attempt to pass a truck while it is plowing or spreading winter materials.
