POTTSVILLE, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Spreading the love… Strangers write special Valentine’s Day messages for patients at a local hospital, and volunteers hand deliver those cards.
Marlene Doyle has been volunteering at the hospital in Pottsville for 11 years. On Valentine’s Day she had a special assignment, to be Cupid’s helper, delivering cards to patients.
Anne Joyce was one of those patients. She’s in the hospital after falling in her driveway and fracturing her hip.
Anne spends her time at the hospital in the rehabilitation wing. In the therapy room, she works with an occupational therapist.
Some of the cards have simple messages like happy Valentine’s Day. While others have more inspiring quotes like, count your smiles instead of your tears. Count your courage instead of your fears.
Anne’s card reads: “Happy Valentines Day from Chicago. Sending you lots of love, hugs and kisses.”
Nearly two thousand cards were distributed to patients in LVHN.
“It made me feel wonderful. I’m so glad someone thought of that idea. It’s so thoughtful,” said Joyce.
It was the second year that the hospital took part in the Valentine’s Day card exchange. They plan to do it again next year. Anyone was able to fill out a card on the hospital’s website.
