SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) As the region’s ski resorts continuing gaining attention from tourists their slopes need tender loving care.

It takes skilled workers to groom the paths many people ski and snowboard on. Montage Mountain there is a slope called “White Lightning,” We are told it’s the second steepest slope on the east coast. It’s a 1,100 foot vertical drop at 46 degrees.

The snow grooming machines are a Cummins Diesel Engine with 500 horsepower. Because of the slopes steepness, operators have to use a winch to help aid them down and up.

“Go down without sliding and then in return pulls me back up,” said Michael Snopkowski, Lead Grooming Operator at Montage Mountain.

54 degrees is the steepest that the “White Lightning” trail has been since it was created in the 90’s. The team at Montage Mountain says more and more people are liking it at its current 46 degrees.
