SNYDERVILLE, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) As the temperatures heat up so do the engines

It’s that time of the year again for motorcycle enthusiasts to feel the wind in your hair, take in the fresh air and hit the road.

“When you’re riding a motorcycle it takes zero effort to drive it.” Said Ty Shoemaker,  of Pocono Mountain Harley Davidson who has been riding for decades.

And while warmer spring weather offers more motorcyclists like Ty the opportunity to enjoy the open road…
Spring and summer months are also the most dangerous for motorcycle riders.
With a 179 fatal motorcycle accidents and more than 3400 total motorcycle crashes statewide in 2015..

“I’ve lost many people in my year here.  That’s one of the toughest part of my job…Unfortunately I’ve lost     Many a friend.”

When sharing the road experts recommend helmets, reflective gear and ride bikes with good l-e-d- lighting to remain visible

“Four wheelers do not see bikes.  We’re smaller and they’re just not looking out for us.” said Alice Swink, Rider Motorcycle Touring Club

“PennDOT currently has the “Look twice save a life…Watch for motorcycle campaign” going and they  also offer a Pennsylvania motorcycle safety program for riders”

Ty Shoemaker recommends riders taking a course,  “I highly recommend anybody to take the the course there’s even things you can learn if you’ve been riding years.”

Most importantly he says riders should have a bike that fits them – and their ability – and car and truck drivers need to pay attention.

The national highway traffic safety administration says riders who wear a helmet are 37 percent less likely to die in a crash, and 67 percent less likely to suffer a brain injury.
Pennsylvania does not mandate motorcyclists wear helmets.
