Seven year old girl dies from auto crash injuries

HAZLE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – Pennsylvania State Police said Monday that a seven year old girl, injured in a car crash Friday night, has died of her injuries.

The accident happened about 10:40 p.m. May 20th when the car in which seven year old Amailey Gonzalaz of Jessup slid off Interstate 81 northbound in Hazle Township.

She was a passenger in the car driven by 33 year old Melanie Burleson, also of Jesup.

Burleson and her front seat passenger, 25-year old Brittany Gallagher of Scranton were thrown from the car.. Neither of the adults in the vehicle were wearing seatbelts, and both were severely injured in the crash. Their condition Monday was readily available.

Police say Gonzalez was wearing a seatbelt but was not in a booster seat. She was trapped in the car and was extricated from the vehicle by members of the Hazle Township Fire Company. She was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital where she died Sunday of her injuries.

The investigation into the cause of the crash continues.

The death comes the day before police across the nation begin what they’re calling “Border to Border”, a crackdown on enforcement of seatbelt laws ahead of the Memorial Day weekend.
