Schuylkill County pregnant teens lean on each other in support group

POTTSVILLE, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — If you’re a teenager, and pregnant, you may often feel like an outcast.  That’s why an organization in Schuylkill County has started a teen moms group that meets once a week. Eyewitness News reporter Haley Bianco was there today to see how the group has helped teenagers with their pregnancies, and newborns.

“Being a teen and being pregnant is really scary. You don’t really know what to do or what’s going to happen,” said Bethany Babb, a 17-year-old mom.

Bethany Babb found out she was pregnant when she was 16 years old. She’s now a new mom. Baby Alexander is three weeks old.

Babb is one of many new and expectant mothers at Care Net’s Teen Moms Group. Care Net offers free services to teen moms in Schuylkill County. This week, moms are learning to eat healthy and keep fit.

“We were trying to show them how they can work out with their baby. So doing squats while holding the baby or doing sit ups while holding the baby,” said Sabrina Hallick, a guidance counselor and fitness trainer.

Harley Mills started coming to Care Net when she was 17 and pregnant.

“It was really nerve-racking, I didn’t want to tell anyone,” said Harley Mills, 18-year-old mother.

When a pregnant teen comes to the center, they get a coach who teaches them how to prepare for the birth, and then take care of the baby.

“He’s only three weeks old, and I’ve already spent hundreds of dollars because everything is expensive,” said Babb.

The center also helps new mothers with baby supplies, like free clothing and diapers.

“I hated being pregnant so much, but I would do it again because he’s just the best,” said Babb.

“I would never trade her for anything,” said Mills.

The teen moms group meets every Tuesday from 11-1 at the pregnancy resource center in Pottsville. For more information, check out Care Net’s Facebook page.
