SHICKSHINNY, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) You’ve heard about early school dismissals for snow but today the late summer heat forced some students out of school early.
Northwest School Distrct let students out a few hours early – because of what they called “excessive heat” in classrooms.
Eyewitness News Reporter Valerie Tysanner stopped by as school dismissed for the day.
A mad rush from school halls … Into the sunshine.
School at northwest let out early today.
It was hot outside… In the 80’s .
But students and staff at Northwest School District say it was even hotter inside.
“it felt like an oven like a pizza oven.” said 8th grader Aiden Treskowski
So as the temperatures kept rising, school officials decided to let students out early.
“In the high school especially in the classrooms with no air conditioning its uncomfortable and not producing a healthy learning environment for our students.” Said Ryan Miner the principal of Northwest Area High School.
Students agree, its hard to learn sitting in the heat.
“Hot humid- couldn’t really focus.” added Madison Goodrich, an 11th grader
Busses pulled up one by one to take students home —
The high school – let out at 1pm. Elementary students – released at 2.
“The temperature gages are reading in the 80s but as far as the levels of humidity in the air it feels more like the mid 90s to 100s.” added Principal Miner
Many students were surprised they got to go home early.
They say – these first few weeks of school… They expect to be uncomfortable..
“It’s always hot so you expect it to be hot so you get summery clothes I guess.” Added Alexa Dzoch, 11th grader.
But at least for one day – students got a brief respite… From learning… In the heat.
