Salvation Army spreads holiday cheer

News

POTTSVILLE, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – You might call them   Santa’s little helpers because these volunteers are making sure there is enough holiday cheer to go around in Schuylkill County.

“It just feels good to be able to give back to a community that gives back to us,” said volunteer Jim Cruse.

The Salvation Army of Pottsville held its annual Christmas gift and food distribution at the Foursquare Gospel Church.

“Tey are really a big help. You just fill it out and they give you the stuff so it’s a big help,” said Dawnielle George.

For Gorge, this initiative means providing an extra special Cristmas for her five children. At no cost to Grge, she’s able to fullfill her kids’ Cristmas wish this year.

“Bikes, and the other stuff is boxed up so i dont know, it’ll be a surpriise. So, that’s good,” said George.

About 400 qualified families from Schuylkill County, in need of holiday assistance,  lined up to get boxes of toys and, clothes. Some of the items came from Toys for Tots drives throughout the county.

The Toys for Tots of Schuylkill County says it received a record amount of toys this year – more than $100,000 worth.

Other toys came from the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program. That pairs a child or “angel” and his or her wishlist with a generous donor. There’s no shortage of donations this year.

“We just want to thank everyone in the community for their generosity. It’s been overwhelming and joyful,” said Envoy Brad Harris with The SAlvation Army.

And volunteers say knowing that more children in the county will wake up to a special surpise this holiday season makes the hard work they put in, worth it.
