(WBRE/WYOU-TV) A Schuylkill County Community is coming together to bid farewell to a well-known businessman who was murdered two weeks ago in New Orleans. 62-year-old Patrick Murphy was laid to rest in Pottsville. The I-Team’s Andy Mehalshick talked with his friends.
Bagpipes played as people came to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Pottsville to bid farewell to Patrick Murphy.
John Byer met Murphy about a decade ago at a local restaurant. He says they became instant friends.
“When he would walk in that door it was like God walked in because everybody would say here comes pat here comes Pat. Like I said Pat.-We’re going to miss you” buddy.” Byer said holding back tears.
Schuylkill County Coroner Dr. David Moylan worked with Murphy on the annual Relay for Life run for the American Cancer Society.
“He took over the Relay for Life and we were just making 10,000 dollars. When pat was done with it was making a couple hundred thousand dollars for cancer patients in Schuylkill County.”
Murphy was stabbed to death inside a New Orleans hotel on February 28th. Police have charged 25-year-old Megan Hall with second-degree murder charges.
We spoke today to a woman who did not want to appear on camera. But wanted to tell a story about how Murphy helped her out as she faced a very tough family situation.
“When my first husband passed away I took my diamond down to Pat and he took it out of the setting he put it in a chain. He fixed the box beautiful so I could give it to my daughter so that she would have a piece of her father”
Schuylkill County Commissioner George Halcovage worked with Murphy on numerous economic projects “A sad day for the whole area most definitely very tragic. We are here to pray for Patrick and here to pay for his family”
The funeral mass was at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church on Mahantongo Street Murphy owned and operated Murphy’s Jewelers in center city Pottsville. His grandfather started the business in 1913. Murphy was known as a mover and a shaker in this community. He lobbied hard for economic development as well as being a supporter of many charitable causes and nonprofit organizations. He was stabbed to death inside the Empress Hotel in New Orleans on February 28.. 25 year old Megan Hall has been charged in connection with his murder. She will have a court hearing next week. Murphy will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery in Pottsville.
