(WBRE/WYOU-TV) Put your helmet on. And lace up your skates. For the Rough and Tough sport of Roller Derby.
Eyewitness News Reporter Anja Whitehead hits the track to give us this inside look at the fast-paced sport.
“It gives me the opportunity to let off steam, its great therapy, it’s a lot of fun,” Said Stephanie Engle, All-Star Roller Derby Team.
There’s hip checking, there’s shoulder checking and a lot of physical contacts. It’s roller derby. While the sport is aggressive, there’s a lot of gear protecting participants.
“We have to wear our helmets, I’m not wearing one right now because I’m speaking but we wear mouth guards to protect from a concussion, wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, and of course skates” Explained Sarah Scinto, Co-Captain of the Diamond City Mayhem.
While the sport is rough, there are many rules to keep injuries to a minimum.
“You can hit in the front, you can hit on the sides, but a lot of the back is a non-target zone. And like low blocking and leading with your head. It minimizes the risk of injuries so we can play the sport safer,” Noted Engle.
The sport also requires a lot of strategies.
“Pizza with a friend is one of our defensive walls that involves a three-person tripod with a brace. And one extra person on the side to catch the jammer if she should go to either side” Explained Scinto.
Though the mostly female dominated sport may seem complex all ages and skill levels can join in on the fun.
“I just wanted to challenge myself and prove that someone my age could do it. And it’s really cool, makes me feel proud of myself,” Lori Bittenbender, Shockers Roller Derby Team.
But all the aggression is left on the track so everyone can be a close knit team.
“It really gets your blood pumping, your adrenaline going, and those endorphins flowing from a really tough work out and it’s a great team sport and a huge spirit of teamwork,” Added Scinto.
The Roller Radicals are looking for recruits.
