(WBRE/WYOU-TV) With the dawn of spring comes another season of harness racing at the Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono. On Wednesday, the track held an opening day celebration as drivers, trainers, and other racing enthusiasts got together.
The Downs are now entering their 54th year of racing, and the 2019 season begins this Saturday, March 16, with 14 races for opening night. Last year, the track played host to the Breeders Crown, the most prestigious event in harness racing and in 2019 there are 134 total cards planned over the course of 9 months. As always — Pocono will be bringing in the best talent in the world.
“Well it’s just like any other sport when you have opening day in football or opening day in baseball, there’s excitement in the air, anticipation, you know. Our everyday racing is so good. Just coming out and seeing the overnights — we still have the best horses in the country, the best drivers and trainers” Said Dale Rapson, VP of Racing Operations, the Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono
“It’s top notch. The drivers are the top of the world, the horses are the top in the world. The track is the fastest 5/8, for the size that it is, it’s the fastest in the world too. It’s exciting and it’s good racing” Added Matt Kakaley, Driver, the Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono
Post-time for this Saturday’s season-opening event is 7-p-m.
