WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)- Dozens of people gathered at Luzerne County Courthouse Wednesday to honor the victims of human trafficking while raising awareness about the issue.

The Red Sand Project aims to recognize people who are overlooked in life.

After a brief ceremony, participants filled cracks in the sidewalk with red sand to remind us of those who have fallen through the cracks in our society.

The event was put on by the NEPA Task Force Against Human Trafficking who say trafficking is in Luzerne County.

“If you look in the news and in the newspaper you will see it,” said attorney Tom Mosca. “It’s not always identified as human trafficking, but it’s there and it is human trafficking. Individuals that are trafficked for labor or for sex, it happens all the time on a regular basis.”

The Red Sand Project has taken place in all 50 states and around the world in countries like Germany, Brazil, and South Africa.
