Priest uploaded child porn to get “revenge towards God”

HONESDALE, WAYNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – He says he did it to get back at God.

We are learning new and surprising details about why a Roman Catholic priest from New Jersey may have uploaded child pornography last year in Wayne County.

Father Kevin Gugliotta was sentenced Thursday morning for uploading the porn to a computer last year at a vacation home in the Gouldsboro area.

Father Gugliotta stayed silent leaving court, refusing to answer questions about why he uploaded the child pornography but according to a pre-sentence report on the 55-year-old, he said he did it out of greed.

Father Gugliotta told probation officers that he was a poker player and says when he lost he felt like God was attacking him. In order to get revenge on God, Gugliotta decided to upload the child porn.

“That was his reason. He’s not happy that that’s how he felt and as the judge indicated, look, there are other ways to handle issues and handle anger!” defense attorney James Swetz said.

Prosecutors say some of the images Father Gugliotta uploaded had boys as young as eight or ten years old.

“No matter what he says why he did it, he still admits he did it and that’s the important thing as a prosecutor,” Wayne County District Attorney Janine Edwards said.

After apologizing for his actions, a judge sentenced Father Gugliotta to between 11.5 and 23.5 months in prison.

Kevin Gugliotta was given credit for 308 days he has already spent in prison. That is roughly ten months. That means he could be eligible for parole in only about a month and a-half.

Some of Father Gugliotta’s fellow priests from the Newark area came to Wayne County to support him Thursday.

They say he has helped other inmates while in jail.

“He’s used this nine or ten months almost as a retreat and he’s prayed a lot,” Father Gabriel Costa of the Archdiocese of Newark said.

When they heard Father Gugliotta may have downloaded porn to get revenge on God, even Father Costa was caught off guard.

“That was a surprising thing in the court, sure, when I heard that but people do things under stress that they normally wouldn’t do,” Father Costa said.

When released from prison, Father Kevin Gugliotta will also have to serve five years probation.

He won’t be allowed to gamble and probation officers will be able to search his electronic devices whenever they want.

Gugliotta must also register as a sex offender for 25 years.
