Trump Tweets Endorsement of Lou Barletta

Hazleton, Luzerne County (WBRE/WYOUTV) -- President Donald J. Trump today tweeted his endorsement of Lou Barletta for the U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania.

"I am honored to have the president's support and look forward to continuing to work with him to fight for Pennsylvania for Senate," Barletta said. "Bob Casey is doing everything he can to stop our president's agenda, including voting against tax cuts for Pennsylvanians and shutting down the government to put Americans at the back of the line. I'm running for the Senate to put the people of Pennsylvania first."

Barletta was one of the earliest members of Congress to endorse Trump for president, doing so in March of 2016, and has been a strong supporter of the president's agenda in Congress. President Trump encouraged Barletta to run for the U.S. Senate against Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) last year and has since publicly stated his support for Barletta's campaign.

President Trump's tweet comes a day after the Republican Party of Pennsylvania unanimously voted to endorse Barletta for U.S. Senate. Barletta has also been endorsed by U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA), the entire Pennsylvania Republican Congressional delegation, and dozens of Pennsylvania state House and Senate members.

The Pennsylvania Senate race between Barletta and Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) is widely expected to be one of the top national races. Politico named Congressman Barletta one of the “must-watch candidates of 2018,” while Roll Call named Senator Casey one of the 10 most vulnerable Senators up for re-election this year. Recent public polling shows only 27 percent of Pennsylvania voters believe Senator Casey’s deserves re-election.

Senator Casey has been a vocal and staunch opponent of President Trump’s agenda, going so far as to call for the president to resign – comments for which Senator Casey was immediately rebuked by members of his own party, including former Democratic Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell.

Senator Casey recently voted against tax cuts, which have led more than 300 companies to give bonuses and raises to more than 3 million employees, and to shut down the government, denying funding for American citizens in an effort to protect illegal immigrants.

While in Pittsburgh in early February, Vice President Mike Pence criticized Senator Casey for voting against tax cuts and opposing President Trump's judicial nominees.

"Bob Casey even voted against giving the Keystone State the power to defund Planned Parenthood," Pence said. "I think the people of Pennsylvania deserve better."
