FELL TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – Police in Lackawanna County are investigating an apparent case of murder-suicide.
The bodies of two people were found inside a home early Monday morning in Fell Township.
Carbondale police and members of the state police forensics team spent Monday at a home on 44th Street in Fell Township.
Investigators say the bodies of Gerald Reynolds and his wife Mary Reynolds were found around 7:00 AM by a family member.
Muriel Torch has lived next door to the couple.
“It’s really, yeah, it’s really sad,” neighbor Muriel Torch said.
Investigators believe 87-year-old Gerald Reynolds shot his wife and then turned the gun on himself.
Police and neighbors say both husband and wife had been suffering from health issues.
They had several children who would often visit but the couple lived alone in the house.
“She was really bed-ridden I’d say for, I might be wrong but 20 years, and he really took care of her!” Torch said.
At this point, Carbondale police believe the couple was last seen around 7:00 PM Sunday night so they’re still trying to pinpoint exactly when the apparent murder-suicide happened.
As Carbondale police took evidence from the scene, investigators said they believe this was an isolated incident and there is no danger to the public.
For neighbors living on this normally quiet street, they were shocked and saddened to hear about what happened.
Neighbors believe the loss of the couple will be felt for a very long time in their community near Carbondale.
“They were, just kept to themselves and they were really an asset for our whole neighborhood,” Torch said.
The Lackawanna County coroner says autopsies are planned for Tuesday to confirm the exact cause and manner of the couple’s death.
