TAYLOR, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It sounds like something you might watch on a TV crime show, but police said this really happened in Lackawanna County.
Loretta Simonson is accused of making up a story about her estranged husband, Charles Simonson, trying to kill her, and police said she staged the crime scene to match her lie.
Charles was released from prison Thursday night, and now Loretta is the one facing charges.
Prosecutors said Loretta told her doctor Wednesday that last week Charles fired a shot at her while she was sleeping at her home on West Taylor Street.
Police said at first, it seemed like Loretta was telling the truth, and there was enough evidence to arrest Charles on attempted murder and related charges.
But as the investigation moved forward, police had a gut feeling that something wasn’t right.
Prosecutors said a neighbor told investigators that she saw the shotgun at the home one day after the alleged attack when Loretta asked her to come over because she was giving things away, including the weapon.
Authorities aren’t speculating on a motive, but an incident of domestic violence was reported in August, which is still being investigated. Divorce paperwork was filed in September.
