People demand answers about police department’s future

SUGAR NOTCH, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Leaders of a community in Luzerne County are trying to stop the rumors that their police department is being disbanded.

Eyewitness News first told you Monday about those concerns in Sugar Notch.

Dozens of people packed into Wednesday night’s borough council meeting to demand answers about the future of the department.

Council members deny that any discussions about getting rid of the police department are going on behind the scenes.

Mayor Bill Davis called the speculation a “Facebook fantasy”, but he told the crowd that Sugar Notch has a serious cash problem and can’t afford to pay for additional police coverage.

Council member Dominick Panetta said he wants to talk to Hanover Township to see if that police department would be willing to work out an agreement to serve Sugar Notch.

The mayor, council president, and police chief all declined to do an interview with Eyewitness News after the meeting.
