PennDOT fixes heat heaves on Route 435

Heat heaves opened during heat wave

ROARING BROOK TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) - After dealing with a heat wave for the better part of a week, relief is finally arriving in northeastern and central Pennsylvania.

Despite cooler and less humid weather, this week's prolonged heat took a toll on some area roads.

PennDOT crews were out Friday on Route 435 North repairing several heat heaves that opened up earlier this week.

Road crews say it's not uncommon to get them in certain spots when there is a prolonged heat wave during the summer.

Route 435 between Roaring Brook Township and Dunmore was down to one lane Friday morning while the repair work was underway.

"When I hit it the other day I had an opportunity to slow down so it wasn't an issue for me but it's the same area every year," Chuck Kralovic of Madison Township said.

Drivers in the North Pocono region quickly noticed the heat heaves especially after hitting them unknowingly.

"It was almost like a ski jump. You definitely came off the ground a bit," Greg Ciaglia of Roaring Brook Township said.

PennDOT spokesman James May says Route 435 is especially prone to heat heaves in certain sections because of its make-up.

Portions of the state road are pavement on top of concrete.

"The concrete that's underneath the road, that is expanding and it's pushing the pavement up," PennDOT spokesman James May said.

May says PennDOT made it a priority to fix the heat heaves as quickly as possible because they are a safety issue.

"It's much more common in the south, you'll have it down there a whole lot more than we have it. We tend to get more of the frost heaves," May said.

Albert Ives of Madisonville remembers a few years ago when a number of heat heaves that opened up during a similar heat wave in Monroe County.

"It was hot like this and Mount Pocono had, along the flats there where you get off on 940, it was just every so often, the concrete was buckled up," Albert Ives said.

While Route 435 North was down to one lane for most of the morning for the repair work, it was back to normal by about noon-time in Lackawanna County.
