BLOOMING GROVE TOWNSHIP, PIKE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – State police are investigating a crash which killed the passenger in the car and sent the driver to the hospital.

Police say the accident happened about 2:30 a.m. Friday morning at the intersection of Surrey Drive and Hemlock Farms Road in Blooming Grove Township.

The vehicle, according to police, traveled off the roadway and into a deep draining ditch, causing it to turn over onto its passenger side.

The passenger, who’s name has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver who was also injured was taken to Pocono Medical Center for evaluation.

Pike County District Attorney Ray Tonkin, posting to Facebook, said the initial investigation by state police “…shows driver had consumed alcohol prior to the crash.”

More alarming, wrote Tonkin “While on scene a drunk driver drove into the emergency scene endangering the first responders at PA State Police, Hemlock Farms Fire Department and Hemlock Farms Public Safety.”

Tonking urged “During this Holiday Season, while enjoying some Holiday cheer, make sure the season stays cheerful by having a designated driver. Remember to steer clear of emergency scenes on the road ways. The life of first responders depends on it.”
