(WBRE/WYOU-TV) A controversy is unfolding in southern Luzerne County over plans to locate a park and ride near their community.
PennDOT wants to put it somewhere near the junction of Interstate 80 and route 309 but people who live in that area say their lives will be turned upside down if that plan moves forward. The I-Team’s Andy Mehalshick has our story.
“The residents are bent out of shape,” Said Mike Elliot of Butler Township.
And those words are the most family friendly we heard today from people who live in the Brookview Estates Development in Butler Township. PennDOT is considering locating a Park and ride for commuters adjacent to this neighborhood.
“I sympathize with them. Taxes are high property values are going down and this will kill it” Said Elliot.
This is where the parking lot would be located. A wooded area on route 309 about a quarter mile from Interstate 80.
Joe Curcio says it would literally be in his backyard.
It’s a nice wooded area. It’s clean it’s normal. We don’t want it back there. It will disturb nature. Why disturb our residents.” other residents are concerned about their safety. They don’t want more traffic coming here”.
“It’s hard enough to get out of the Brookview, that street the way it is. I mean traffic on and off. When they are coming down the mountain they just go on that shoulder pass you off. You’re just praying you are not going to get hit or side-swiped” Said Carol Elliot, Brookview.
State Representative Tarah Toohil is asking PennDOT to reconsider its plan. “There are problems with park and rides, everyone acknowledges that park and rides can have problems with a drug element. The element of people that might come to a park and ride not for ride sharing.”
PennDOT says a final decision on the location had not yet been made.
