(WBRE/WYOU=TV) Luther Coleman Jr from the Berwick area won the largest Cash Five lottery prize in Pennsylvania history. $2.4 million dollars.
He bought the ticket on a whim with the last dollar in his pocket.
The ticket was purchased at Sheetz, 2100 W. Front St., Berwick, where Coleman, 63, is a frequent customer.
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to congratulate the winner of this historic jackpot,” Lottery Executive Director Drew Svitko said. “This jackpot run also produced thousands of other winners across Pennsylvania, which helps the Lottery fulfill its mission of generating funds for older Pennsylvanians.”
(WBRE/WYOU-TV) It was all smiles at the Sheetz store near Berwick Tuesday as Pennsylvania lottery officials present a ceremonial check to Luther Coleman. Coleman played the Cash Five game inside the store in Frid,ay March 8th. He was walking out of the store and put his last dollar into this machine and had the it quick pick Cash Five numbers.
He wasn’t sure if the machine at Sheetz was correct in verifying his big win.so..
“I turned around left it clear reset it again. Then the second time I verified it. I turned around put it in my pouch I went up the street to another place checked it two more times.” With lottery offices closed on Friday night. He knew he had to wait and live with his secret until Monday when he would travel to lottery headquarters in Harrisburg to verify his big win.
“It kept you on edge. Everybody says did you sleep at all? I said I don’t think I slept for a couple of days.. You know” Said Coleman
Family and friends celebrated Tuesday with Coleman. There was even a cake with the winning numbers as part of the icing.
Coleman’s brother William kept his brother’s secret. “He told me to keep it under my hat so I didn’t get excited until the next day and I said I’ll ride along with you to Harrisburg. We had a ball that day” Said William Coleman.
