CARBONDALE, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU-TV) The city of Carbondale is poised to lose one of its entertainment facilities. Workers say Mohegan Sun Pocono is planning to close its off-track betting facility in the pioneer city later this month. Eyewitness News Reporter Eric Deabill has the details
The Off-track Betting Facility in Carbondale has been a place for gamblers to go and bet on horse races for years — but now — it appears its luck has run out.
Workers say “The Downs at Moheganan Sun at Carbondale” is expected to close later this month.
“I’m surprised that it’s closing. Yeah. I really am” Irene Conte of Peckville stopped by Thursday afternoon.
She says her father used to come all the time.
“I can remember on his birthday i’d go see him and he’d never be home. They’d say he’s up here. I’d come up and buy him dinner and sit. He enjoyed being with his friends up here”
Donte Sghiatti Is 89 years old.
He admits he comes to the “OTB” two or three times a week to bet on the ponies.
He says this place is like a second home — where all his friends are.
“I don’t think they should close. I think this is good for the community. People can go up here and spend a couple hours”
Schiatti admits when the Carbondale OTB closes he’ll most likely still go down to the Mohegan Sun Pocono Racetrack in Plains Township but he says this location was convenient since its only about ten minutes from his house.
He acknowledges online gaming -and other options have taken their toll — but that type of technology isn’t for him.
Management from Mohegan Sun Pocono has not responded to requests for comment so it’s unknown exactly how many people currently work here or what exactly will happen to them..
According to workers and people who visit this facility — they’ve been told the last day will be Sunday, May 20th.
That is just one day after the Preakness Stakes.
