STROUD TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Your old shoes are wanted in the Poconos.
At Gary’s Meat Market in Stroud Township you’ll find bacon, burgers, brisket and a bin.
“I believe this is the third or fourth year we’ve had it,” says Denise Oney, employee, Gary’s Meat Market.
Gary’s is one of many local businesses with a bin to collect gently used shoes.
This is a big fundraiser for ‘Girls on the Run Pocono’. The non-profit empowers young girls to be confident and active through a ten-week after school program that ends with a 5K.
“These girls, it’s absolutely amazing to see how much they change for the positive,” smiles Kimberlee Zateeny, Girls on the Run Pocono.
It’s not just flip flops and sneakers being collected. You could donate roller skates, ski boots, or almost anything that goes on your feet.
The shoes will be shipped to third world countries. In return, ‘Girls on the Run’ gets paid by the pound.
The money benefits a scholarship fund for girls who can’t afford the program.
“Everyone knows they have shoes under their bed, in their closet just hanging out and needing to get out of the house,” Zateeny adds.
The shoe drive lasts through Thanksgiving-time.
