(WBRE/WYOU-TV) The SHINE after-school program will be the topic of Sunday’s Newsmakers.
Jayne Ann Bugda and Andy Mehalshick are the hosts of Newsmakers. They will have as their guests Carol Nicholas, Director SHINE Luzerne County, Rachel Miller-Strucko, Director SHINE Carbon/Schuylkill Counties, and Senator John Yudichak.
The panel will discuss the SHINE Program and its many projects. The after-school program using the project based STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) curriculum and is very successful.
Senator Yudichak will talk about his strong support for the program and the recent book he co-authored to help benefit the program. Newsmakers will air Sunday, February 10 at 6;30 am on WYOU and 11:30 am on WBRE.

The program uses a project-based STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) curriculum
1. Improve academic performance
2. Improve student behavior and school day attendance
3. Increase knowledge of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics)
4. Facilitate family involvement in student learning and improve family literacy

“We Saved the Bees and the Butterflies” available at Barnes and Noble. We Saved the Bees and the Butterflies is based on two young SHINE students who are curious about the decline in bee and butterfly populations. The students embark on a quest to save the bees and butterflies while learning about the STEAM curriculum. All proceeds of the book go directly to the SHINE program The Book is Co-authored by Senator John Yudichak, Congressman Lou Barletta and Caroline Jones.
