SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) We all know the saying “a new year, a new me.”
People in a Schuylkill County community are taking that phrase and putting their own twist on it. A group formed to revitalize Schuylkill Haven.
The Strategic Planning Initiative met for the first time Monday evening at Penn State Schuylkill. They went over goals and reviewed a 2006 economic revitalization study.
In that study, reverse the decline of population by providing a better place to visit, a stronger local economy with more small businesses, attractions, beautify the downtown and more.
Their plan of attack is the use the study as a guide, define their direction and fetermine their goals.
“If we communicate what we have in a total picture and tell people outside of our immediate community of what we do have. I think we can engage tourists to come to Schuylkill haven,” said Cecilia Michalik, President, Greater Schuylkill Area Business Association.
“Bring all those elements together and have everybody working together and really make it a sestination for people,” said Lorraine Felker, Director of Walk In Art Center.
The initiative group is made up of business owners, non-profits, and residents. Before the group they have been working independently to improve the area. Now, this allows them together and more efficient.
